about

Shoshana Jedwab is a feminist singer-songwriter of Jewish and world contemporary sacred music. Her zipper song, “Where You Go,” arrived at the right moment, providing a protest and prayer anthem celebrating radical inclusion and love in the face of rising xenophobia. “Where You Go (I Will Go)” won song of the year in 2017 at the Unitarian Universalist General Assembly and was included in Extinction Rebellion U.K.’s Songbook. Shoshana Jedwab is also one of Jewish Rock Radio’s “Women Who Rock the Worship World.”

“Torah Orah” is a joyful, social justice-oriented song for the Torah Service and beyond that adapts Stephen Foster’s 1850 bluegrass classic, “Angeline the Baker.” “Torah Orah”’s cover art, by Jacquelyn Moore, celebrates a feminist Torah/Wisdom tradition of liberation and earth-embodied consciousness. Since “Torah Orah” is an adaptation of Stephen Foster’s pre-emancipation song, its cover art remembers the injustices perpetrated on the enslaved Angeline the Baker and visions her restoration to power, rootedness and dignity.

All proceeds from the sale of “Torah Orah” will go towards The Fund for Reparations NOW! (FFRN!) for People of Color harmed by enslavement. Shoshana Jedwab is personally familiar with the justice work of reparations. Her father was a Jewish survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp where 80 members of his family and 90% of his townsfolk were genocided during the Holocaust. Shoshana Jedwab’s father received monthly reparation payments from the citizens of Germany due to his incarceration, enslavement and torture. Shoshana’s adaptation, “Torah Orah,” calls us to dance into an ancestral wisdom practice of liberation and ecological reciprocity.

lyrics

Torah Orah Torah
Fire from the mountain
Torah Orah Torah
She’s a desert dwelling fountain
Torah Orah Torah
Wheels of wisdom rolling
Torah Orah Torah
She’s the Tree of Life we’re holding

And we bring her round
And we’re singing loud
Torah Orah Torah
Practice liberation
Feed the stranger and the orphan

Torah Orah Torah
Gather round and listen
Torah Orah Torah
To what’s written and what’s missing
Torah Oran Torah
For ancestors and children
Torah Orah Torah
Heal the planet, keep her rhythm
